This view of the 480 shows the Westinghouse cross compound air compressor
mounted under the left running board. 480 is equipped with a number 6 ET
automatic brake valve, simplex injectors and a power reverse which is located
on the engineers side. In service 480 was considered as the "big engine", circa 1910,
and often pulled 110 empty freight cars westbound at 15 MPH. The engine
is hand fired and was built with a baffle type fire door, which was
eventually replaced with an air operated butterfly fire door.
