U.P. 480 (class C-57) was built in 1903 for freight service at a cost of $16,483
and was used between Rawlins and Laramie, Wyoming. When heavier engines
came along the 480 was sent to North Platte, Nebraska and was last used
between North Platte and Grand Island until replaced by larger engines.
The 480 is 65 feet long and when fully loaded weighs 328,340 pounds.
The tender is of the Vanderbilt type and holds 7,000 gallons of water
and 28,000 pounds of coal. The 480 had a boiler pressure of 200 psi
with a driver diameter of 57 inches. The 480 has 22 x 30 inch cylinders
with a 30-inch stroke. 480 developed 34,648 pounds of tractive effort.
