
Boeing B-17G-90-DL "Flying Fortress" S/N 44-83663 "Short Bier," was manufactured by Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach, California, and delivered to the USAAF on 1 May 1945. Altho, it was delivered too late to participate in WWII in Europe, it was used in various capacities in the Midwestern U.S. and was later stored until transfer to the Brazilian Air Force in 1953. After a stint of 15 years in Brazil, it was returned to the U.S. Airforce at Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio. The plane was then transferred to various museums around the central and eastern U.S. In 1987 the plane was transferred to Hill Aerospace Museum where restoration of the exterior was completed in early 1991. Restoration of the aircraft interior is ongoing by museum volunteers. "Short Bier" is sponsored by a Mr.Lindquist, who served as the navigator on the B-17 "Short Bier" which was assigned to the 493rd Bombardment Squadron (Heavy) of the Eighth Air Force and was later lost on a mission during WWII. "Short Bier" carrys the markings of the 493rd.
