Vest Order Looms

Dean Lewis is putting together an order for club vests. For you newcomers, you may have noticed that the ACCRS likes to have members wear "club" vests during shows. It gives us a little bit of a "uniform" and makes it easy to determine if the person leaning over the rail to touch a piece of equipment is a member or not. A variety of colors are available, and you can have your name and logo of your favorite railroad stitched on the front. For more information, please visit the vendors site. Total cost to members is $25; the ACCRS picks up shipping and the cost of embroidering the "ACCRS" across the back. See Dean with your order (specifically size, color and what logo and name you want on it), and he'll send it in with the rest. The deadline for orders is the end of April.

From the HO scale Trainmaster

Wow. There is only 2 months to the FAIR. 2 MONTHS!!!

We need to finish up projects and solve any track and electrical issues. It would be nice to have this done in time for a couple of Friday night test runs.

Last year we divided the layout into 5 sections and had a team work on each section. Since that worked so well lets keep the same teams in the same sections. We should also start cleaning the building. There is a lot to do but if all work together it will not be so bad.

-Seth,

HO Scale Trainmaster

Layout Cameras:

Wayne reported the following via the Email distribution list earlier this month:

I found out at the last business meeting that a couple of the video cameras were not working. I took a look at them yesterday and determined that they both needed replacing.

The power supply had gone out for camera #5 (the overhead view of the block 35 transition to the hidden yard). Camera #2 (north view of the hidden yard) has been giving us problems for a year despite my best attempts to fix it.

Fortunately, I had two video cameras in inventory (thanks to Paul). I have replaced both cameras, tested them, and they are now in operation.

Camera #5 now has an extremely clear view and also has an automatic iris, which should help a lot when we run the computerized scenic lighting. Camera #2 has a much better mount and is also has a very clear view. I think we will get many years out of these new units.

I tested all the other cameras and everything is working normally. If you notice problems with the video cameras or the video system, please let me know. I know my attendance has been somewhat irregular lately, but I am still keeping up with what is going on and actively involved with the electrical stuff.

Housekeeping:

With the fair rapidly approaching the issue of housekeeping is increasing in importance, we seem to have the usual problem of clutter and trash accumulating around the area, under the layout and so forth. If you make a mess, please clean it up. If you get a drink from the fridge, please use the recycle barrel for your empty container. Cobweb removal in the layout room is an ongoing issue and is needed as well.

Clinics:

A DCC decoder install clinic was held on Saturday, April 21. A number of members participated in the demonstration and hands on event. A respectible number of locomotives were upgraded with new decoders installed during the session. We should be seeing several additional locomotives during our upcoming DCC operating sessions.

Big Bertha was fired up and several members took the opportunity to grill something for lunch. Ann brought down a couple of variations on tiramisu, which were quite delightful.

Consideration is being given to scheduling another DCC decoder installation clinic, possibly after the Fair. If you would be interested in attending a future DCC clinic please let us know.

Equipment Donated

Member Lee Buckner has donated several Amtrak passenger cars and one heavyweight observation car to the club. The cars are currently being marked for club ownership and having their weight, couplers and wheels checked.

Lee, thank you for the donation.

O Scale News:

From the O Scale Trainmaster:

The following information was received prior to April 15th. - Editor.

The Atlas SW1500 Raritan River switcher locomotives No. 1 and No. 2 are temporarily out of commission due to excessive wear on the insides of their wheels from rubbing by the pickup wires. The gears and the "Oilite" sleeve bearings are in good shape. There is an effort under way to remedy this method of pickup from the wheels so that there is little or no wear on the wheels themselves. The problem manifested itself by causing excessive current to be drawn by each unit. The excessive draw was caused by a large amount of brass particles coming off of the backsides of the wheels and being deposited down in the electrical parts of the engines. Also, if anyone finds any detail parts that have been broken off one of these units, please put then on the shelf adjacent to the dispatch panels.

This weekend is the monthly work session for the layout improvements and repairs. It is also Tax Time. I hope that we can have some folks down for a little while at least so that we can get back in the swing of things, since the annual fair show is coming up in just a couple of months.

A small pile of new sign-up sheet forms have been generated and will be available near the main cabs and dispatch panel.

Here comes the Fair- It's closer than you think!

-George

Western Pacific Historical Society Convention held in Livermore.

The Western Pacific Historical Railroad Society held its 2007 Convention in Livermore, CA, on April 13th and 14th. It was attended by "O" scalers Dick Stark and Steve Colby and by "HO" scalers Lee Buckner, Jere Ingram, Dean Lewis, and Andy Herrera. There were slide presentations on car kit bashing, WP model railroad layouts, and various scenes of the past shared by several former WP employees. A room at the Doubletree Hotel was set up for selling WP souvenirs and memorabilia. The finale on Saturday evening came with a fantastic banquet set up for the attendees and a guest presentation speech by Mr. Arthur Lloyd, former Passenger Public Relations Manager with the Western Pacific Railroad. He talked mainly about the conception and operation of the famed California Zephyr and how it compared to other passenger trains of that time. This event turned out to be very enjoyable by all. Next year's convention is scheduled for April in Sacramento, CA.

Prototype News

Southern Pacific 2472

Former Southern Pacific 4-6-2 2472 was under steam in early April as part of a FRA inspection. The boiler passed the inspection and work will soon commence in applying insulation to the boiler and installing appliances to return the locomotive to service on the Niles Canyon Railway. A sister locomotive 2467 is currently on display at the State Railroad Museum at Sacramento.

Kansas City Southern unveils new paint scheme

KCS has adopted a very striking paint scheme for its locomotives. In a press release dated March 20, 2007 KCS stated "The heritage paint scheme of vibrant yellow, red and Brunswick green (that appears to be black), is based upon that of the Southern Belle passenger trains that ran on The Kansas City Southern Railway Company (KCSR) between 1940 and 1969. The only difference between the newly painted units in the U.S. and Mexico will be the logo on the side of the locomotives' nose and the added "de Mexico" on the side of the KCSM units. A similar scheme appears on the Panama Canal Railway Company's (PCRC) freight and passenger locomotives." Photo of KCSM 4650 (caution very large image).

"KCS has also committed to purchase 1,050 covered hopper rail cars and 150 covered coil rail cars, which will receive a paint scheme complementary to the heritage theme. The first of 150 covered hoppers were to be released on March 22 from American Railcar Industries in Paragould, Ark. The covered hoppers will be subleased to KCSM."
